POLICE cordoned off a square in Sheffield city centre after glass fell from St Paul’s City Lofts Tower.
Eyewitnesses said sections of one of the glass panels which clad the tower fell from about two-thirds of the way up the 32-storey building, off Arundel Gate.
The glass smashed into shards on the ground below.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “An area in St Pauls Square was cordoned off by police and local authorities on Sunday, for public safety reasons as it is believed a pane of glass had broken on one of the floors of the City Lofts building, which resulted in some glass falling onto the pavement below. The cordon has now been removed.”
A shocked eyewitness said: “One of the brown glass panels was breaking up and shards of glass were falling on the street below from the 23rd floor.”
