Torch carriers visit Mayor

A TORCH of remembrance which commemorates the seven million people who died during an enforced famine in Ukraine in the early 1930s arrives in Barnsley on Monday.

The torch is travelling through 33 countries across the world and is part of the commemorative activities being carried out this year to mark the 75th anniversary of the 'Holodomor' - the systematic starvation of more than seven million Ukrainians in 18 months.

The torch, visiting Barnsley because the town is twinned with Gorlovka in the Ukraine, will be received by Barnsley Mayor Coun Ken Sanderson and will be presented by top Ukranian officials. The Mayor will sign a book of remembrance.
