A SUBMARINE officer from Sheffield has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for 25 years’ dedication as a member of the Royal Navy.

Chief Petty Officer Coxswain Steve Thorpe, aged 42, from Hillsborough, serves on HMS Ambush, based at Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.

Proud wife Kerry said: “Steve has worked exceptionally hard over the years and it is fantastic for him to be recognised by receiving the Meritorious Medal. He is a determined individual and always goes the extra mile.”

As well as duties at sea, Steve was instrumental in the submarine crew’s success at the Navy’s Field Gun Competition last June.

And he was one of two crew from HMS Ambush to be commended by a judge in Barrow-in-Furness for saving a pub doorman from a vicious attack.
