A leading appeal court judge is to be Sheffield University’s next Chancellor - the figurehead of the institution.
Lady Justice Rafferty, who graduated with a law degree from the university in 1971, will take over the role from Sir Peter Middleton next summer.
Dame Anne has been a Lord Justice of Appeal since 2011 and will become the first woman to hold the office.
The Chancellor is empowered to confer degrees and other academic awards and has a key ambassadorial role.
In an outstanding career, Dame Anne has served in a number of senior positions.
She said: “The university gave me so much that I have always felt in its debt. This privilege – which means the world to me – begins my opportunity to repay. Sheffield is a world-class player as its research contribution is outstanding.”
