A community activist who has led a campaign against plans to build a school on green land in Tinsley is standing as a local election candidate for Ukip.

Muxafar Rahman will be one of the candidates hoping to represent Darnall on Sheffield Council in the local elections on May 7.

He has been involved with a campaign against the council’s plans to build a controversial new ‘super school’ on the site of Tinsley Recreation Ground.

The currently Labour-run council has said the measure is needed to move pupils at the current Tinsley nursery and infant and Tinsley junior schools away from the M1 and no other locations are suitable or available.

Mr Rahman claimed council decisions were made ‘before any real consultation’ took place.

He added: “I have decided to stand as a Ukip candidate in Darnall because of the real heartache Labour has inflicted towards our community.

“I have been a resident of this ward all my life and have seen it slump into a eyesore.

“People have realised they deserve a real voice to represent their concerns.

“Our local park is under threat and the council has ignored a 1,300 strong petition.

“This iconic park should be left for the community.”
