Timmy gets the Mallett down for charity - PICTURES

WE'RE wide awake, it's good to know you're ready and you're wide awake...

Children of the 1980s will instantly recognise that jingle from the Saturday morning TV show Wacaday.

And there was a chance for thirty-something adults to revisit their childhood when the show's wacky TV host Timmy Mallett arrived in Sheffield.

Timmy – who says he's 12 but is actually 52 – looked ageless in head to toe fluorescent clashing colours and yellow and black glasses.

And his act wouldn't have been complete without his shocking pink and yellow mallet which he has been bashing people on the head with for more than 20 years.

He was at Graves Park to host a charity It's a Knockout in aid of Children Today. Seven teams flung themselves over a giant inflatable obstacle course smeared in water and foam to raise funds.

Timmy said: "When you start singing the tune to Wacaday it reminds you of sunny days and school holidays and that's what we have here.

"We have done a number of these events around the country in aid of children who are really in desperate need of assistance and special equipment for different kinds of disabilities.

"I'm synonymous with doing children's shows and It's a Knockout has always been one of my favourite shows on the TV so it's fantastic to see everyone having a great time.

"It's good fun and I enjoy coming to Sheffield. I've appeared at the Corporation nightclub student night and did a show at the University so I love coming here. They are always a nice audience and a good crowd.

"Everyone wants to be hit on the head," he laughed. "The youngsters have never even seen Wacaday but they know exactly what to do and always ask me to hit them."

He claims he just has the one mallet and it's the original one from the 1980s. "I do look after it and it does get refurbished every now and then. It is insured.

"How much for? Squillions," he grins.
