YOUNGSTERS discovered how harsh education used to be when they travelled back in time for school lessons.

Pupils on a school visit from Westbourne School in Broomhill, Sheffield, discovered the days of dunce hats, the threat of the cane, and strict teachers.

A spokesman for the independent school added: “There was some fun to be had as well, though, when the day ended with a chance to play with some authentic Victorian toys.”

The Year 1 youngsters also learned about the life of a Victorian chimneysweep in the trip to the Museum of Childhood in Sudbury.
