Ticket review after rail bridge fury

A TRAIN operator has promised to review its ticket checking policy at Sheffield station after residents were barred from the footbridge.

Railway staff were checking tickets on Friday to stop fare dodgers - but also stopped pedestrians using the bridge as a short cut to and from the city centre. The move has outraged campaigners who won their fight to stop ticket barriers being installed, which would have prevented them using the bridge to and from Norfolk Park.

Today an East Midlands Trains spokeswoman said: "Manual ticket checks at stations form part of our ongoing revenue protection programme.Ticket checks have taken place at Sheffield station for several months.

"Following ticket checks on Friday, we will be reviewing our processes in advance of future checks.

"Sheffield City Council has recently turned down the listed building consent application to install automatic ticket gates. This does not include manual ticket checks, and we will continue with our programme of checks to help reduce ticketless travel."
