A YOUTH cafe is threatened with closure after a bid for £500,000 in Lottery cash was rejected.

Shakers Bar in Askern attracts around 300 youngsters a week and had put in a bid to try to secure its long term future.

Now it is faced with trying to raise £20,000 to keep it running in the short term.

The alcohol-free bar is the only one of its sort in Doncaster.

Project manager Howard Connell said: “We should be able to keep going just for two or three months, but it’s gong to be difficult.”

Shakers was originally set up by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, a scheme set up using European cash.

The custom-built base on Askern High Street only opened its doors last spring.

It offers a juice bar, televisions, games consoles, a juke box and activities for 11 to 18 year olds.

Mr Connell is appealing to businesses to help with running costs. Log on to www.shakerscafe.co.uk for details.
