Thousands of people are calling for Sheffield’s star Mad Man with a Pram to be formally recognised as a city legend

More than 6,000 people have already signed a petition calling for the charity fundraiser to receive his own star on the city’s walk of fame outside Sheffield Town Hall – in just a few days.

Organisers have worked out that more than one person has backed their cause every single minute since it was launched on Saturday.

The campaign came about after a picture of John – who walks across the city every day to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support – was posted on Facebook group Pictures of Sheffield Old and New.

Mum Cath Fletcher, of Oughtibridge, was inspired to launch an online petition.

The secretary said: “It has just gone mad, the support has been unbelievable.

“We’re hoping we can get him a star outside the Town Hall, because he deserves something for himself.”

Rob Turner, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Sheffield, said: “John has dedicated his life to raising money to help others.

“Last year alone, John raised more than £30,000 by walking around the streets of Sheffield in all weathers.

“This would be a wonderful way to recognise his amazing support.”

And the man himself said he was ‘dead chuffed’.

John, of Richmond, said: “It’s unbelievable so many people want me to have a star, I just can’t comprehend it.”

No new star was unveiled this year as Sheffield Council said there had not been time to run the Sheffield Legends scheme due to the high-profile events in the city, including the Tour de France.

A spokesman said nominations were considered by an independent board against certain criteria. The campaigners plan to hand in the petition to council chiefs.
