Thousands raised for Children in Need

THE cash is being counted following last Friday's Children In Need appeal, when people across South Yorkshire gave up their time to take part in a host of charity events.

An evening of music from local bands raised over 5,000 for Children In Need at Sheffield University's Octagon Centre.

Over 200 people enjoyed music from jazz artists and local rock bands Tush, Funkotics, Troika and Tax Return.

Staff at the Kenwood Hall Hotel in Nether Edge teamed up with pupils from nearby Brantwood School for Girls and raised a grand total of 600 with a sponsored bike ride.

Around 40 generous volunteers clocked up 24 hours of cycling on one of the leisure club's exercise bikes which was moved into the hotel lobby for the event.

Workers at the Sam Jones health club at Crystal Peaks shopping centre also got on their bikes for Children In Need, joined by staff from Halfords and Crystal Peaks' Pc Dan Garside.

The 200-mile challenge raised 1,183, which will go towards helping disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the UK.

Lee Greenwood, from Crystal Peaks shopping centre, said: "We were humbled by the generous donations given by the Crystal Peaks shoppers."

Bakers at Greggs in Lowfield collected 2,190 through charity buckets in store, as well as raffling a hamper donated by staff, who spent the big day working in their pyjamas to raise more money for the good cause.

Elsewhere in Sheffield, teachers and pupils at Myers Grove School, Stannington, raised 238 by swapping roles for the day.

Andy Ireland, headteacher at Myers Grove School, said: "It was great to see both staff and students get into the spirit of the day and make such an effort for Children In Need."
