More than 1,500 pheasants have been destroyed in a fire at a Doncaster farm.

The birds were among 2,000 being bred at Moscar Lodge on Heyworth Lane, Moss, where fire broke out yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews from Adwick and Thorne stations spent two hours tackling the blaze which engulfed the pheasant rearing sheds.

A JCB digger vehicle was also damaged by the fire and a gas cannister had to be cooled down.

A fire service spokesman said it was estimated about 1,600 birds had perished in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental but is still under investigation.
