The Star's Martin Smith is Yorkshire Journalist of the Year.
THE Star's Martin Smith has been crowned Yorkshire Journalist of the Year and today the paper is celebrating other top honours.
Martin was named Sports Writer of the Year and was highly commended in the The Adrian Sudbury Feature Writer of the Year Award (Daily) at the Yorkshire Press Awards.
Judges then handed him the overall top award of Yorkshire Journalist of 2009.
His work was praised for its sensitivity and humour. Judges said he has the ability to get to the heart of subjects he wrote about.
The Star also won Best Multimedia News Delivery – for its digital coverage, including video, street cameras, texts, emails, Twitter and Facebook alerts, when floods brought Sheffield to a standstill in June.
Shortlisted were Claire Lewis, for News Reporter of the Year, Fiona Firth, for Business Writer of the Year, Sarah Washbourn, for Photographer of the Year and The Star, for Yorkshire Newspaper of the Year.
Editor Alan Powell said: "It was a great night for The Star's editorial team. The paper was lauded across a whole range of areas and showed the strength and scope of our reportage.
"And it was a particular triumph for Martin Smith. To be named Yorkshire Journalist of the Year is a brilliant achievement."
The 12th annual Yorkshire Press Awards, held at Wakefield's Cedar Court Hotel, were again sponsored by Yorkshire Water.
