In response to Jack Massey’s letter, I too am horrified at the proposed felling of a spectacular elm tree in Brincliffe that miraculously survived Dutch elm disease.
As a child I was traumatised by the sight of all the elm trees around Brincliff being gradually struck down by Dutch elm disease, their stunning green glory being transformed into giant diseased skeletons.
I was therefore astonished and amazed to stumble across the said elm a few years ago.
I consider this ancient elm to be a miracle and something that should be of scientific interest.
I also assumed it would be protected under a tree preservation order.
