Have your say

As I sat with my New Year morning cup of tea, while the rest of the house slept, I indulged in a few moments’ reflection of the year that has just left us and thoughts of what 2016 will hold for the people in the council ward I represent.

Looking back over 2015 I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with so many of the community volunteer groups that the Beighton, Hackenthorpe . Sothall and Owlthorpe area is blessed with.

People with their own family and/or work responsibilities who turn out regularly to do litter picks, improve the local environment, provide activities for children and adults, be it in sport, scouting, dance classes, gardening or knitting.

New Year is a time to take stock and the New Year’s Honours list brought some welcome news for The Limes Community Centre in Beighton as Joan Harding, one of the stalwarts of the charity was awarded a BEM. As a local councillor I have visited the lunch club there, with my ward colleagues, numerous times over the years and I can say that the lively atmosphere, combined with good food (and a game of bingo) is a weekly highlight for many of the pensioners who attend.

Joan, Brian along with several volunteers do a terrific job. Long may it continue!

So as 2016 starts I would like to give thanks for the people among us who are the givers of their time and passion and make our Sheffield communities the richer for it. Happy New Year.
