Terror bomb victim is walking inspiration
A WOMAN who lost both her legs in the 2005 London bombings is visiting Sheffield in an attempt to bridge the divide between different communities.
July 7 survivor Gill Hicks is stopping in the city as part of 'Walktalk', a 200 mile journey she has organised from Leeds to London, which aims to connect communities.
Gill, who is able to walk again thanks to a pair of prosthetic legs, developed the idea with husband Joe Kerr and Zulfi Hussain, of Global Promise and the Together for Peace campaign, in Leeds.
The three of them are walking about 10 miles each day and inviting people to join them on the way.
The aim is to bring people together who might otherwise never meet, to discuss different points of view and build bridges between different communities.
Gill said: "Honest dialogue among people holding different opinions can be tough but these difficult conversations will be invaluable if we are to understand and learn from one another and together shape a better society."
The walkers pass through Rotherham and arrive in Sheffield on Thursday. They will have a reception in the Town Hall with the Lord Mayor, Coun Jane Bird, before moving on to Chesterfield on Saturday.
Community groups, families and people of all faiths, nationalities, cultures and backgrounds are invited to join the walk. The Sheffield stage starts from the Peace Gardens at 11am and makes its way to Mount Pleasant Park, Sharrow, via the Sheffield United ground at Bramall Lane.
Simon Argall, operations director at Sheffield United, said: "We are pleased Bramall Lane has been chosen for part of this terrific event and help raise the profile of Walktalk.
"The walk is a fantastic effort by the participants and we wish them the best of luck."
People wanting to join the walk can register on the day from 10.30am at the Peace Gardens or at St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane, as it passes at 11am.
Bring lunch and have a picnic in Mount Pleasant Park at the end of the walk or register in advance on www.walktalk.org.uk or by calling 0113 815 5120.
Anyone registering in advance will get a chance to have a free lunch courtesy of the Aagrah Restaurant in Leopold Square.
