Six homes in a row of terraced houses in Bawtry, near Doncaster, were evacuated after a gas leak scare in the early hours of yesterday.
A wheelie bin fire is believed to have damaged the gas supply pipe to one of the cottages on Doncaster Road just after 3am.
Police ordered the evacuation of all of the row as a precaution and the occupants were not allowed back until 6.45am.
A spokesman for National Grid said the bin fire had melted the exterior service pipe to the cottage. The cause of the fire is not known.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue appliances were also called to the scene as a precaution but there was no further incident.
The National Grid engineers cut off the supply and were due to carry out repairs yesterday.
