TEEN SHOOTING: Executed in street

A MURDER investigation was underway in Sheffield today after a teenager was executed yards from a street busy with shoppers. The man – Asian, and believed to be just 17 years old – was shot dead in broad daylight on Spital Street in Burngreave at around 1.45pm yesterday.

Detectives believe the shooting, outside a barber's shop, was a targeted execution, not a random attack, which "may well be gang- related".

Friends and locals named the dead youth as Tarek Chaiboub – nicknamed GT – and said he had only just been released from hospital after being injured in a stabbing.

He is understood to have attended Hinde House School.

The scene of the murder is just half a mile from Nottingham Cliff Recreation Ground, where 16-year-old Jonathan Matondo was shot dead last October, and comes less than a week after Tarek Chaiboub and another teenager were stabbed and seriously injured within 24 hours in Wincobank.

Senior police refused to be drawn on whether the murder may be part of a feud between the S3 and S4 gangs in Burngreave.

But Chief Supt Paul Broadbent told The Star: "I don't believe it to be a random attack. By that I mean I don't believe the wider community has anything to fear.

"It may well be gang-related.

"We are keeping an open mind. We are not ruling anything out."

A pal of Tarek, who did not want to be named, said: "It's all to do with gang war and it's pathetic really. They're all supposed to be friends. They spend their days killing their friends."

He added: "I bet it has something to do with him being stabbed last week. I only saw him this morning – he was on his way to get his hair cut.

"If I'd known it was the last time I'd see him I'd have given him a big hug."

A female friend added: "He was in the barber shop and someone asked him to come out which he did and they shot him.

"It's a really hard time for his family and the community."

Tarek's mother and older sister are visiting family in Syria. He also has an older brother and younger sister.

Armed police were today patrolling the streets of Burngreave as officers carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Tarek was shot dead opposite a doctor's surgery where staff rushed out to try to save his life, and opposite the SureStart Burngreave Children's Centre on Spital Street.

Kids, parents, and staff inside the building at the time were being offered counselling today, at a drop-in session at the First Start Children's Centre on Firth Park Road, Firth Park.
