A FOOTBALL scheme devised by police to keep youths out of trouble has received a £75,000 cash injection from the Football League Trust.
Sport FX was set up in the Dearne Valley by South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley Football Club’s Community Sports and Education Trust to reduce anti-social behaviour in Goldthorpe, Bolton-upon-Dearne and Thurnscoe.
It enables 11- to 19-year-olds to play football on Thursdays and Fridays free of charge.
Wayne Bullimore, trust chief executive, said more than 100 teenagers a week took part in the sessions and they were hoping to start offering career opportunities.
Inspector Alan Simpson of Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Sport FX has seen a reduction in anti-social behaviour on the nights it takes place, as the people that tend to be hanging around the streets are now playing football.
“The initiative has gained the support of the local community and everyone has positive things to say about it.”
