TEEN SHOOTING: Three quizzed

POLICE were today continuing to question three men arrested over the shooting of Sheffield teenager Jonathan Matondo.

A South Yorkshire Police force spokesman said officers had arrested a 26-year-old man from Burngreave at an address in north Derbyshire on Saturday.

Two other suspects, both aged 18 and arrested on Friday remain in custody over the killing last Wednesday night.

Police today have to apply to magistrates for an extension to continue to question them.

Jonathan, from Verdon Street, Burngreave, was killed by a single bullet wound to the head in Nottingham Cliff in Burngreave as children played at a recreation ground nearby.

Floral tributes and messages have been left by family, friends and well-wishers at the scene of the tragedy.

A vigil is due to take place at the murder scene at 5pm on Wednesday.

Jonathan's death has shocked and stunned the local community - who have been praised by police for their willingness to come forward and provide information. Chief Supt Jon House said: "We have been delighted by the response of the local community who have come forward to help with this investigation and enabled us to move as quickly as we have done."

Police were out on the streets of Burngreave over the weekend, providing what they describe as a 'reassuring presence' to local residents. Prayers were said for Jonathan's family at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Andover Street Burngreave and its sister church in Carterknowle this weekend.

Pastor Andrew Rashford-Hewitt said members of the local community have been gathering at the church in Burngreave to pray for Jonathan's family every night since his killing. "There has been a lot of very strong support for the family with about 100 people coming each night to the church to pray," he said.

Jonathan, who talked about becoming a church preacher was also known as a keen musical MC, who went by the nickname 'MC Venomous'. Police have refused to be drawn on a motive for his murder and have not said whether they believe his killing was targeted.

But Burngreave residents say the streets are a hotbed of crime between local crews from the S3 and S4 postcodes. There are unconfirmed reports that hours before he was killed Jonathan was caught up in a shootout at a property in Melrose Road, Pitsmoor.Locals say he and a group of youths were forced to barricade themselves inside as a rival gang fired shots at the house.

They say Jonathan may have been shot by a member of the same gang who turned up at the park hours later. Friends claim he was caught-up in crossfire - and Sheffield commander Chief Supt Jon House confirmed he believed other people were present when he was shot.

Other pals have told The Star Jonathan was an innocent victim caught up in a tragedy, and according to two teenage friends he was not involved in gangs.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the incident room on 0114 296 4473.
