TEEN SHOOTING: Community wall of silence

A HIGH-RANKING police source today warned officers investigating the shooting could face a wall of silence from the Burngreave community who were historically reluctant to speak to the police.

The source said: "Burngreave is notoriously difficult to police. There are a lot of tensions between police and the community and the community often closes ranks."

Burngreave has suffered from a series of violent gang-related attacks which have also blighted neighbouring Pitsmoor.

Over the last two years shootings and stabbings involving rival S3 and S4 gang members have escalated and violence in the area culminated in October last year with the shooting of 16-year-old S3 gang member Jonathan Matondo at the Nottingham Cliff recreation area in Burngreave.

The youngster, known by the street name Venomous, lived on Verdon Street, Burngreave, just yards from the site of yesterday's shooting.

Other gang-related incidents in the area include:

In September 2008 an S4 member in Burngreave in September last year. Some S3 members were arrested but the victim refused to speak to police.

In August 2008 there was a shooting at an S4 member's house on Sedan Street, Burngreave.

A gunfire attack at the home of an S3 member's girlfriend in August 2007 was followed the next day by a shot being fired into a child's bedroom at a house belonging to an S4 member's girlfriend. Shots were fired at an S4 member in a car, who refused to co-operate with police, the same day.

An arson attack at the home of an S4 member on West Quadrant, Firth Park.

A gunfire attack at the family home of an S4 member in August 2007 followed just a few hours later by a similar attack at the family home of an S3 member.

Clashes between S3 and S4 members in March and May last year when they met at the Youth Offending Team unit in Sheffield. Threats involving firearms were made.

The shooting of an S3 member outside the Cactus Club, Burngreave, in October 2006. Intelligence provided to police suggested two S4 members were to blame but the victims refused to speak.

A man who was stabbed in his eye during a driving lesson. S4 members are believed to be responsible but the victim refused to make a complaint.

S3 member who went to hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh in August 2006. He refused to co-operate with officers but police intelligence suggested an S4 gang member was involved.
