ONE of Sheffield’s biggest taxi firms has said its drivers are continuing to have enhanced criminal records bureau checks although drivers of black cabs are no longer required to have them.
Although standard CRB checks are mandatory for all drivers, changes to the law mean the more stringent tests, which check more sources, are not required unless drivers work frequently with children or vulnerable groups.
But Manor Top-based private-hire firm City Taxis said all its 850 drivers have enhanced checks.
Paul Gosney, City Taxis business development manager, said: “We transport many vulnerable people, therefore we took the decision that every driver must have an enhanced CRB check, making it mandatory for our drivers.”
The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which campaigns on public safety, has criticised the decision to downgrade the level of CRB checks, but Sheffield Council said it has had no choice but to implement the new rules.
