A popular pet tarantula has stolen from a Sheffield visitor attraction in a bizarre crime.

Hannah the Mexican red-kneed tarantula was taken from Heeley City Farm by raiders who smashed their way into a glass tank.

They struck as staff were bringing animals back in at 4.10pm on Sunday.

The exotic spider – one of two tarantulas at the farm – was a favourite exhibit with visitors and people with learning disabilities who use the farm regularly.

Aloysius Lalloo, who works with people with learning disabilities at the farm, said: “Staff went out to bring some animals in and when they got back somebody had smashed some of the glass off to force it open and take the entire tank with Hannah inside.

“She is very popular, especially with young boys who visit, and the people with learning disabilities that we help know her too so they will be upset.

“We have had her for years and years so it is really annoying and we are worried about whether she is being taken care of properly.

“Tarantulas aren’t cheap to buy, especially big ones like Hannah.

“It would be great to get her back, someone has offered a replacement but we want to know she is okay.”

Police have been informed.
