Takeaway chef murder 'not gang-related' - NEW VIDEO

POLICE have this afternoon reassured Sheffield residents that the murder of takeaway chef Nawajid Ali Khan was not gang related.

Mr Khan died after being mown down by a 4x4 as he was being attacked by a gang of men outside Milan's takeaway in Chesterfield Road, Heeley, on Sunday afternoon.

A post mortem examination confirmed the 31-year-old died from multiple injuries.

Speaking at the murder scene this afternoon, Chief Superintendent Jon House said: "Witnesses have told us that a group of males approached Mr Khan and committed a sustained attack on him outside Milan's takeaway, and as a result of the attack he died a short time later.

"We know from a number of lines of enquiry that this is not a gang related incident.

"We are interested in speaking to anyone who may have been in the area at 3.45pm just before the kick off of the Sheffield United versus Manchester City match who may have seen these men."

Police this morning arrested two women aged 23 and 28 on suspicion of murder.

Meanwhile friends have described father-of-two Nawajid as a "gentle man" whose murder had left them shocked and angry.

Mazhar Iqbal, owner of the Mangla restaurant on Spital Hill, said Nawajid had been a second-chef in the kitchens for six years before moving to Milan's.

"Everybody knew him here at the Mangla," he said. "He was a good man, a family friend, a really nice man and a gentle person - very popular.

"We all feel gutted, very shocked and very angry at what has happened. He had two children, two little girls - the elder one is about five and the little one just two-and-a-half years old. It's terrible."

Friends said Nawajid lived with his uncle in Darnall but was originally from Pakistan. He and his wife - the mother of his two young daughters -had split up.
