Sybil honoured for a life or death response

A VOLUNTEER first aider has been praised for helping an off-duty police officer who was stabbed while dealing with a street fight.

Sybil Naylor, a member of the St John Ambulance charity, was shopping in Dronfield when she heard shouts that somebody had been stabbed.

She ran outside, identified herself as a first aider, and battled to stem the loss of blood from 48-year-old Detective Sergeant Kevin Walton until paramedics arrived.

Mrs Naylor also treated the officer, who had been stabbed a number of times in his chest and arm, for shock.

She asked police at the scene to request an urgent ambulance response, and asked for someone to send a message to the local doctors' surgery.

Clive Dennis, Commissioner of Operations for Derbyshire St John Ambulance, said: "Part of first aid training is using your initiative to improvise if you have no first aid kit to hand.

"This is a perfect example of first aid in action when it is most needed.

"This volunteer is to be congratulated for her efforts, which could well have made the difference between life and death for her patient."

Mrs Naylor, from Dronfield, has been a St John Ambulance member for over 30 years and rose through the ranks to the position of Divisional Superintendent before retiring from the leadership position in June.

She first got involved with the charity when she had to take a first aid certificate as part of her job with the ambulance service in Sheffield.

She moved to Dronfield in 1966 and, on a visit to a community gala the following year, saw members giving resuscitation demonstrations and joined up, helping out with the cadets.
