Surge in inquires after Tour announcement

A HOTEL chain has seen a surge in enquiries at its Sheffield branches after it was announced the 2014 Tour de France will be passing through the city.

Premier Inn’s Sheffield Angel Street venue dealt with more than 170 enquiries within a week of the Grand Départ being announced, a 32 per cent increase in booking calls year on year.

Enquiries came from people across the world who will be travelling to South Yorkshire for the world’s biggest cycling event.

Meanwhile, the Premier Inn on St Mary’s Gate has seen a 34 per cent rise in calls and enquiries are still flooding in.

A company spokeswoman said: “The demand for rooms is so high we’re considering setting up a dedicated line to handle enquiries, which would be a first for us.

“Following an amazing British summer of sport, it’s no surprise the nation is looking to wave the British flag again and support our top cyclists along the route of the 2014 Tour de France.

“These sites boast some of the UK’s best history and most beautiful countryside and it’s wonderful such a prestigious sporting event has encouraged people to visit them.”
