A SHEFFIELD councillor says he believes it is possible for Sure Start children’s centres to implement budget cuts without affecting services - after revealing one branch was spending 48 per cent of its budget on administration, management and overheads.

Coun Colin Ross, cabinet member for children’s and young people’s services, highlighted figures for Sharrow Sure Start after being challenged over the council’s planned 15 per cent budget cut.

Emma Parmakis, a mother with a two-year-old child who attends Sharrow Sure Start, presented a petition containing 5,814 signatures opposing the cuts, and said: “It’s vital children have a good start.

“The amount of cuts Sure Start is taking compared with other areas of children’s services is disproportionately high.”

Labour councillors also opposed the move.
