Supermarket acts on plastic bags ban

ENGLAND'S underwhelming and immeasurable target to reduce the 'environmental impact' of carrier bags by 25 per cent by the end of 2008 has prompted supermarkets to act.

Morrisons has introduced two tough new shopping bags for the knockdown price of 29p and 39p. The store already sells a reusable 10p carrier but the new bags are made of much stronger and long lasting polypropylene.

The Star is campaigning for the introduction of a charge on carriers to cut consumption and reduce waste.

In Ireland usage fell by 90 per cent when a similar scheme was launched.
