Subway Galvanized artists into action

DAZZLING designs created by pupils from a Sheffield secondary are brightening up the daily walk to school through a once-dingy subway.
A marvellous mural has been painted by youngsters from Sheffield Park Academy on the Manor, with the help of professional artists Pete Barber and Antony Donnelly.
Pete and Antony from public arts collective Urban Canvas worked on the project which transformed the underpass beneath Prince of Wales Road and the Sheffield Parkway.
Academy’s vice principal Craig Dillon and leader for art Wayne Fallon worked with the pupils providing guidance and support.
Help also came from the city council, the East Community Assembly and the area’s crime prevention unit, which provided funding.
The mural, which will be seen by hundreds of children and families every day, was unveiled by the new Lord Mayor Coun Sylvia Dunkley, in one of her first duties in the role.
Mr Fallon said the area was in sore need of brightening up.
“The project was part of our commitment to providing our students with creative and diverse learning experiences – something it has certainly achieved,” he said.
“It has introduced students to fresh ideas and ways of working and has given them the opportunity to express themselves in new and innovative ways.”
The pupil team included Year 11 BTEC arts students, members of the school’s art group and 14 youngsters. It took two weeks.
Photographic workshops created the source material which inspired the Asian-style designs.
The mural, titled Galvanize, intends to celebrate the best the community has to offer, with the grey background representing steel and the white floral design representing the white rose of Yorkshire.
Academy principal Maria Nightingale said: “We are incredibly proud of our students, who we believe are Sheffield’s finest. This project has provided the ideal opportunity for them to showcase their creativity and skills and the finished product is absolutely superb.”
Coun Dunkley said: “I am delighted to be able to give official recognition to this fantastic piece of work. This is a great platform to showcase the talents of these young people and as this is a busy thoroughfare, I hope the mural will be seen by hundreds of commuters every day.”
