Stumblers reach the Peak of fitness

THEY counted them all out – and they counted them all back.
Unlike last year when a couple of runners went off the route and added a few extra miles, the 2011 Stanage Stumble went without a hitch.
For the 78 runners and walkers heading out of aptly- named Limb Lane, conditions were favourable, sunshine with a light breeze on what the Long Distance Walkers Association describe as a ‘testing challenge event’.
HSBC Sports Club at Dore was the start and finish location for a 25-mile run or walking course and 10-mile walk taking in beauty spots such as Stanage Edge, Redmires Moor, Higger Tor and Limb Valley, in aid of Home-Start, the leading family support charity for vulnerable families - £400 raised from entry fees before sponsorship rolls in.
With ages ranging from 14 to 76, more people did the longer route, 47 versus 31, with everyone back safely within nine hours.
The first runner landed at four hours 20 minutes - mightily impressive for near marathon distance on a course with a 4, 000 foot ascent and some fairly rugged paths, albeit with of some of the most spectacular views on the edge of Sheffield.
