STUDENTS at The University of Sheffield have ranked it top among prestigious institutions for its services.

An independent survey based on students’ views put the university in first place for its support provision among the Russell Group of universities.

The university was also ranked number one for living and accommodation cost, the availability of financial support, and the chance to earn money while studying. It was also seen as the university with the most eco-friendly attitudes.

Abdi Suleiman, president of the university’s students’ union, said: “Coming top in the Russell group for student satisfaction for the second year in a row is pleasing in itself. But when you realise it equates to tens of thousands of experiences some students will cherish for life, it really makes us all proud.”

Director of dtudent services, Dr Andrew West, added: “We place a strong emphasis on the quality and effectiveness of our support services, in the context of an all-round excellent student experience. It is great to have such positive feedback from students.”

The Student Barometer survey spoke to more than 97,000 students across the UK.

The study also ranked the university second as the place most students would recommend to their friends, with 90.9 per cent of students willing to recommend Sheffield to others thinking of applying to university.

A review of Sheffield University has judged its academic standards as meeting UK expectations.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education also found the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities, and the quality of its information about learning opportunities, were up to scratch.

Examples of good practice included the appointment of an officer to co-ordinate support for disabled students.

Recommendations for improvements included making external examiner reports available in full to students in the current academic year.
