Students hold hall in protest despite court ruling
TSTUDENTS are continuing to occupy a lecture theatre at Sheffield University today - after plans to evict protesters were postponed following a rally against higher tuition fees and education cuts.
The university had won a High Court injunction to remove the students from the Richard Roberts Building, on Western Bank, claiming the lecture hall was needed for exams.
The protesters were planning to leave after holding a 'final rally' yesterday afternoon, attended by around 200 people.
A student spokesman told The Star the university's pro-vice chancellor, Paul White, told the rally the eviction had been "postponed".
He added: "He told us that the exams had been moved to a different building. It's a very minor concession, but it does show the breadth of support that the protest has had. We're still going to be here."
The university had offered the protesters an alternative lecture theatre in the Hicks Building, but this was rejected.
Mr White previously said enforcement officers would be brought in if students refused to leave the building.
