MORE than 15,000 people descended on Meadowhall shopping centre for the UK’s biggest student lock-in shopping event.
Meadowhall retailers offered exclusive discounts for students, with a number of stores offering up to 30 per cent off during the evening and giveaways including Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
Students were entertained with dance classes run by Rationale street dance and Stepz Dance Academy, a mad hatters’ tea party at Fancie cupcakes, local designers customising Office shoes and free makeovers at the Body Shop.
A Meadowhall spokesman said social media played a key role in the lock-in with thousands of students pre-registering their attendance online.
And Meadowhall’s Twitter feed also started to buzz in the lead up to the event, with hundreds of students continuing to tweet about their attendance throughout the evening.
Gemma Noble, of Meadowhall, said the event had been a big success and popular with the new students.
She said: “Sheffield is a popular choice for students so we wanted to mark the start of the new academic year with a grand gathering.
“We’re delighted to have welcomed so many students for the lock-in and hope they are delighted with the deals they managed to pick up!
“The event has proved such a success we are already planning for next year’s event.”
