Bomb disposal experts were called to a Sheffield housing estate after the discovery of a ‘suspicious object’ in a wheelie bin.

Police sealed off an area around Atlantic Drive in Lowedges, yesterday, for public safety.

The object, believed to be a maritime distress flare, was made safe with by the army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who were alerted at around 8.40am.

A cordon was put in place and the surrounding roads were closed by police for several hours as a safety precaution.

Deborah Needham, who lives nearby, said: “I saw the police arrive and wondered what was going on. Then someone told me the Army bomb squad were on their way.

“It was quite exciting really. Thankfully, it was only a flare.”
