Streetchoir Festival: Harmony in the heat - PHOTOS

CHOIRS came together to sing loud and proud on the steps of Sheffield City Hall.

The mass chorus of 740 singers representing 35 choirs from around the country was the centrepiece of the 28th National Streetchoir Festival, an event which was born in Sheffield back in 1984.

This year's gathering was the first in the city since 1992 and attracted choirs from York, Leeds, Manchester, Bradford, Nottingham, Leicester, Aberystwyth, Brighton - and even Germany.

The hosts for this year's festival were members of the Out Aloud gay choir, with the help of other local groups Purple Cats, Body of Sound and the Sheffield Socialist Choir.

Hazel Ainsley from Brighton's Hullaballoo Community Choir said she attended the festivals every year but this was her first time in Sheffield.

"Like the other choirs we are performing all over the city over the weekend and we have some great slots on Devonshire Green and in the Peace Gardens," she said.

Songs on the steps in front of a healthy lunchtime crowd included Unison in Harmony, Singing For Our Lives, Nana Was A Suffragette and a rousing finale of the Internationale.
