A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 52-year-old man died of head injuries at a house in Barnsley.
Forensics officers were combing the scene at the home on Highfield Avenue, Athersley South, for clues yesterday while detectives made house-to-house inquiries and the property was taped off.
Police were first called at 8.20pm on Saturday to reports of a 52-year-old man with a head injury.
Paramedics attended but the man later died and the boy, aged 17, was arrested.
A police spokesman confirmed he was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Neighbours on the street said there had been a party at the property where the incident took place.
One neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said: “There was a party there all day on Saturday.
“I was out for a lot of the day but I came home to find the blue flashing lights everywhere at about 9pm.
“We’ve never had anything like that happen before so it is quite a shock.”
A man, a woman and a young man were said to live at the house.
Another neighbour added: “The CID came around last night talking to the neighbours - we knew that somebody had died.
“They were asking people if they had heard or seen anything, but I didn’t hear anything else.”
They said: “You don’t expect it, do you, on your own street? I only know the people who live at the house by sight really.”
A police spokesman said officers were investigating the ‘suspicious death’.
She added: “Officers were called to a property at around 8.20pm on Saturday, August, 22, to reports of a man with a head injury.
“The man has sadly died.”
