A PLUCKY worker at a South Yorkshire DIY store grappled with an armed robber who pulled a knife on him when he was caught stealing vacuum cleaners.
Workers at B&Q’s Corton Wood store in Brampton, Wath Upon Dearne, approached the man when they spotted him attempting to steal a number of Dyson vacuum cleaners at around 6.50pm on Thursday evening.
A witness told The Star: “I think the man was trying to get a load of vacuum cleaners from a hiding place where he had stashed them in the garden section.
“Staff confronted him and he pulled a knife.
“One of the staff grabbed hold of him but he managed to wriggle free by slipping out of his jumper and he ran off bare-chested.
“Luckily no one was injured but it was all very scary.
“The police arrived very quickly and I noticed the helicopter was conducting a search of the area.”
Police said the robber was white, around 5ft 8in tall, slim, aged in his 30s with dark, short curly hair.
The witness said he was wearing jeans, a light grey jumper type top and white trainers.
A B&Q spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident last night at our Dearne Valley store to which the police were called.
“Given this is now in the hands of the police we feel it inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact officers.
She said: “The suspect jumped into a light green car near Morrisons. He was on a mobile telephone and was running around without a shirt on.
“We believe he was carrying a pocket pen knife but it didn’t appear he was threatening anyone.”
Anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire police on 0114 2202020 quoting crime reference number 946-05/05/11 or call the Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
