The smash happened at 6.12am when Daniel, who was driving a white Vauxhall Astra Sportive van downhill towards Sheffield, tried to overtake several other vehicles and crashed head-on into Mark’s blue Ford Transit, travelling in the opposite direction.

A passenger in the Ford, a 23-year-old Hoyland man, had to be treated at Barnsley Hospital for a broken right hand and whiplash.

Following the initial collision, a red Rover car crashed into the rear underside of the Transit van.

Its driver, a 42-year-old man from Gleadless, Sheffield, suffered bruising and whiplash.

n These are believed to be the 27th and 28th fatalities on the A616, known as an accident blackspot. Cameras which measure motorists’ average speed were installed on the stretch of road in 2003.
