Plans for an iconic Man of Steel sculpture which will be put up close to the M1 have been conditionally granted permission.
The proposed 27 metre high Man of Steel will be installed on a former landfill site on Meadowhall Road, Rotherham, overlooking the M1 and Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
The sculpture has been designed by Sheffield artist Steve Mehdi, who is leading the project, and would be higher than the Angel of the North in Gateshead.
The plans were put together by Axis Architects.
The artwork will sit on FCC Environment Group’s site close to where the Tinsley Towers used to stand.
A planner’s report said any impact on the Greenbelt would be ‘outweighed by the very special circumstances for siting this proposed piece of public art in the key landmark location’.
Mr Mehdi, said: “The project team would like to thank everyone involved in making this possible, and a big thankyou to all our supporters, far and wide.”
