A NEW scorpion statue which will become the gateway to Sheffield Forgemasters International is taking shape.

The 14ft sculpture, due to be finished in a couple of weeks, is being built in part by 21 apprentices from the firm, who volunteered.

The scorpion, four metres high, two metres wide and six metres long, and features clasping claws, an armoured body and arching tail.

It will sit outside gate number 2 on Brightside Lane.

Apprentice Charlie Laycock, 20, said: “I am privileged to be a part of this once-in-a lifetime opportunity to build what will be a piece of history. I’ll be able to look back on it in years to come and say ‘I helped make that.’”
