Shoppers have called for more stalls and choice at Sheffield’s £18m Moor Market to boost visitor numbers in a Star poll.
Footfall figures showed this week that 3.1m people visited the market in its first year - compared to 3.6m at the old Castle Market in the last full year before it closed.
Sheffield Council is offering traders a 50 per cent discount on rent until March 2017 because of ‘challenging trading conditions.’
Now a poll of Star readers has shown that 56 per cent of the 48 polled who took part wanted more stores.
Another 23 per cent hoped for longer opening hours, 19 per cent easier transport links and two per cent said the market was fine as it currently is.
Scores of shoppers have also shared their ideas for the market, as well as what they love and do not like about the facility, with The Star online.
Matt Bigland, from Sheffield restaurant The Milestone, said the market needed to showcase the diverse mix of people living in Sheffield and ‘target a new generation’ with events like night markets or cookery schools.
Haroon Rashid said: “Too many empty stalls. Small businesses need incentives to open up stalls.”
Andy Wroe said: “For me the market needs a post office, men’s hair dresser, florist and theme shopping areas at different times.”
The council is currently seeking a florists and chippie for the market. Seven traders are taking their stalls to Fargate today.
