News of a sports park to be developed on the site of the former Don Valley Stadium is a positive move for the city.
However, in amongst the feeling of goodwill to those involved with the project must also be an air of wonderment about why something like this hasn’t come to fruition before.
The park will become home to Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield Sharks and host a sports research centre, 1,200-place school and a university technical college.
These are excellent facilities but it has only come about after an utter failure of imagination about the original stadium.
Opened in 1990 why has it taken nearly a quarter of a century to come up with this plan? A bright mind may also have found a way to keep the athletics track and developed the land around it years ago.
Let us be under no illusion that this scheme is the result of careful planning and prudent financial management of the old Don Valley Stadium.
Eagles and Sharks have been desperate for their own homes for years. It is fantastic news that both clubs will now have a base from which to develop.
Well done to all those who have pulled the project together. We look forward to the regeneration of this iconic site.
