Philip Sheldon, a 45-year-old joiner, said he got up to find Swanbourne Road, Sheffield Lane Top, taped off and police "everywhere".
He told The Star he had heard a speeding vehicle at around the time the murder victim was found bleeding to death in the street.
"The only thing I heard was at about 4am. A car sped off up the road and hit a speed bump. By the time I got out of bed the car had gone.
"The car sped off up to the main road where Netto is. It was not slowing down."
Kenneth Hall, 54, a school supervisor who has lived on Swanbourne Road for seven years, said: "We didn't know about it until I got up.
"My wife rang me at about 9.10am and said one of her mates couldn't get into work because they had found someone stabbed at 4am."
Neighbour Edward Platts said: "I was not able to leave my house all day. It was within the police cordon because this happened about 100 metres from where I live.
"The police also sealed off a gennel. The first I knew was waking up at 6am and seeing police cars.
"I saw men in white suits walking up and down the road as though they were looking for something and taking photographs. It is shocking."
Sheila Meehan, 75, said: "A neighbour told me there had been a stabbing. I feel nervous about the whole thing. It is frightening to think people are carrying knives on a street where you live. I heard the helicopter and saw the police taking photos. "
Julie Powell, 46, said: "I woke up to see police cars and lots of officers having a good look around.
"Police haven't disclosed anything about what happened, we are just relying on word of mouth, but we understand the victim is a man with two young children. It is very sad for his family"
Elsie Morris, 70, said: "I have never seen such a hive of police activity in all my life . There were officers everywhere, sniffer dogs and the helicopter.
"The police have been in gardens and some were in a section of the road that was sealed off so residents couldn't leave. This is a very quiet street normally."
Residents said the man was stabbed near a house which has previously been raided by police.
One local, who would not be named, said strangers call at the house at all times of day or night: "People think nothing of speeding up and down at 2am, 3am, 4am."
