St Luke’s birthday walk

Have your say

IT might be only a stroll in the park – but it means so much more to St Luke’s Hospice...

The charity’s Starlight Walk will celebrate its 40th anniversary – as the highlight of a birthday year of fundraising fun.

The Star is joining forces with the hospice to encourage readers to sign up to the 5km evening event, which follows a route from Endcliffe Park to Forge Dam and back.

Una Moran, director of fundraising and communications at St Luke’s, said: “This is a fantastic way for our many supporters across the city to raise money to help us care for Sheffield people with life-limiting illnesses.

“You can walk in memory of someone who was close to you, walk for someone you know who has been helped by St Luke’s, or just walk for fun and fitness.

“We need your help to raise at least £50,000 so we can continue to provide the highest level of care for more than 1,400 patients, their families and carers every year.

“Less than a third of our funding comes from the NHS and this year we need to raise at least £4 million just to keep on doing what we do.”

Paul License, The Star’s deputy editor, said: “St Luke’s is one of the city’s most treasured institutions. Many thousands of people have learned of the comfort and care which it offers at the most tragic and trying of times.

“And without exception they are full of admiration for the help they received. I know many people will want to support this sponsored walk.”

The event takes place on Saturday May 21, beginning at 6.30pm with live entertainment in the park. The walk sets off at 8.45pm – providing a twilight setting for participants.

Una said: “It’s a walk that is suitable for people of all abilities but don’t worry if you don’t feel up to the challenge – simply come along to the park, enjoy the party and cheer our participants!”

St Luke’s has been working in the city caring and supporting terminally ill patients and their families for the past 40 years and has 550 unpaid volunteers and 185 staff.
