Sports cash for groups

A SPORTS project working with children with learning disabilities has got cash to splash on swimming lessons after landing a government grant.

Sheffield Inclusive Sport will use its 7,397 Awards for All grant to coach children in swimming skills, and to stage galas for its 500 students.

Pupils from special schools across South Yorkshire will also be invited to take part in the end-of-course events, set to take place next summer.

Emma Flaherty, project manager, said: "Our aim is to provide sports activities for young people with disabilities - but we also want to provide ways for those children to progress and compete in sports if they are enthusiastic to do so.

"Many children with learning, emotional or behavioural difficulties don't get the chance to develop, and they are often told what things they can't do. We want to help them realise their potential and help them learn about the things they can do."

Staff at Surehealth Ltd are also celebrating after landing a 7,350 grant to pay for a series of alternative exercise classes in the community. The company aims to make alternative therapies such as yoga and massage available in the city.

Other organisations to benefit from a grant include the Sheffield Carers Centre given 2,620 to set up new support groups for carers, South Yorkshire Fencing who received 10,000 to deliver fencing course in schools, and Seventh Day Adventist Churches youth club who will use a 5,780 grant to pay for a residential trip to the Peak District.
