RULING Labour councillors in Sheffield have been criticised for being slow to spend a £5.3 million fund to help businesses.
Only £225,000 of the Local Growth Fund has been used so far, a report to the authority’s cabinet has revealed.
“Spending on Local Growth Fund projects has been very slow,” finance officers said.
The fund was formed using £5.3 million of Government money, allocated through the New Homes Bonus over the previous two years.
Coun Simon Clement-Jones, Sheffield Council Lib Dem finance spokesman, said: “Labour councillors never tire of complaining about the lack of money they can get their hands on.
“Yet here was £5 million to support local jobs.”
Labour says the money is to be spent over the coming year.
