Speed cut at crash site

The speed limit on a route between Sheffield and the Peak District, dubbed the 'road of death' due to its history of fatal accidents, is set to be cut from 60mph to 50.

Sheffield Council's cabinet highways committee has been recommended to approve the change on the A57 between the city and the Derbyshire border, where three bikers have died in five years, at a meeting on Thursday.

People living beside the road through Rivelin and Hollow Meadows have called for more action to slow traffic for years.

They say dozens of less serious accidents also occur every year, many of which go unreported.

The road has long straight stretches and sharp bends - and is regularly targeted in police crackdowns on speeding motorcyclists.

Another accident blackspot, the A61 Penistone Road, between Grenoside and Whitley Carr, also the scene of fatal crashes, is set to have its limit cut by the same amount.

And the 30mph limit on the Rivelin Valley Road is to be extended by 100 metres to slow down traffic on the approach to Malin Bridge, where the limit is currently 40mph.

However, the maximum speed is set to be increased at three other locations.

Officers have recommended that limits on the A61 Penistone Road between Owlerton and the city centre, and A621 Baslow Road from Lane Head Road, Totley, until after the bus terminus, are to be raised from 30mph to 40mph and street lights removed after a campaign by nearby residents.

And the 40mph limit on the A6102 Bochum Parkway, Norton is to be raised from 40mph to 50.

The board is also set to approve better signs and repainting of road markings to cut accidents on Manchester Road, Crosspool; Station Road, Mosborough; Beaver Hill Road, Handsworth; Bernard Street, on the edge of the city centre; Holywell Road, Grimesthorpe; and Ecclesfield Road, Wincobank.
