A special edition of Sheffield’s famous Henderson’s Relish is to help the city’s hounds find loving homes.
The Sheffield Retired Greyhounds Trust commissioned the Yorkshire sauce company to produce 1,000 bottles bearing a unique label, which will help raise funds for the dog charity.
The RGT bottle will feature a cute design by Sheffield artist Victoria Butterell, to support the RGT Sheffield branch, which, with the support of Owlerton Stadium, has homed hundreds of retired greyhounds since it opened in 2006.
It will star Freddie and Dougie, two long term greyhound residents at the RGT based at Gosling Moor Farm in Wortley.
Also featuring is Dibnah, who was rehomed several years ago, but recently returned to the kennels when her owner sadly died.
Thankfully the happy hound found a new home the very same weekend.
John Gilburn, chairman of the trust’s Sheffield branch and managing director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: “Retired greyhounds make excellent pets and using something that is loved across the city and beyond like Henderson’s Relish is a fantastic way for us to let people know about the dogs at our farm that need loving new homes.
“All of the dogs featured on the label are black. Black dogs in general have been found to be difficult to home and we are using this opportunity to show the public that they are just as fun, loyal, loving and beautiful as dogs of other colours and should not be overlooked.”
Nic Brereton, vice chairman of Owlerton Greyhound Owners Association and owner of Geelo Racing, has provided funding for the project.
She said: “We want to make sure our dogs, and all racing dogs, are properly rehomed and looked after once they finish racing.”
The RGT bottles are now on sale at a selected number of venues throughout the city, including Porter Brook Deli on Sharrow Vale Road, Oakbrook Deli on Oakbrook Road, Endcliffe Park’s cafe and at the RGT in Wortley.
It will also be sold at Sheffield Makers’ Fair at St Mary’s Church, Bramall Lane, on December 6.
The regular Henderson’s Relish label will continue to appear on all other bottles.
Liz Castleton from Henderson’s Relish, said: “Henderson’s is really pleased to be able to help the trust and wish them every success.”
