Spate of mountain rescues

EDALE Mountain Rescue Team had its busiest weekend in four years - with five call-outs in the space of two days.

Volunteers got their first call on Saturday afternoon when a 28-year-old man from Brighton fell while rock climbing at Stanage Edge, suffering injuries to his chest and lower back. Her was flown to hospital by air ambulance.

Shortly afterwards the team was called out to Birchen Edge, near Baslow, where a 42-year-old Sheffield man had fallen suffering injuries to his abdomen and pelvis. He too was flown to hospital by the air ambulance.

At lunchtime on Sunday the team was called to Bleaklow, where a 14-year-old girl had fallen into the valley of the River Alport.

Because the accident occurred in the area covered by Glossop Mountain Rescue Team, an Edale team paramedic treated the girl until the other team arrived at the scene. She had suffered a suspected broken ankle. While the girl was being dealt with the Edale team got a call-out to Hathersage, where a 26-year-old Sheffield man had fallen on Burbage North crag, suffering an open fractured ankle.

He was flown to the Northern General Hospital by Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The last call came as the team was packing away its kit, when help was needed for a 58-year-old man from MIlton Keynes who had fallen while climbing at Froggatt Edge.

He had head and ankle injuries and was flown to Chesterfield Royal Hospital for treatment.

- Buxton Mountain Rescue Team has bought new casualty care equipment using donations of almost 5,000.
