Would-be Tom and Barbaras are invited to a series of masterclasses to learn how to make the most of their allotments.

The events, organised by Heeley City Farm but held at Wortley Hall Kitchen Garden in Wortley, Barnsley, will teach people how to ‘make every penny count’ when tending to a plot.

A farm spokesman said: “Allotments are very much in the news at the moment, with all the discussions over proposed rent increases for plots.

“So now is a very good time to learn how to maximise output from your own piece of earth and make every penny and minute spent on it count.

“Many people take on an allotment wanting to live the dream, growing all their own fruit and veg in The Good Life style and never using a supermarket again.

“In reality most new starters have little experience, save for perhaps a few tomatoes in a window box or grow bag. When they excitedly get the keys to a plot after a long wait on Sheffield’s allotment waiting list, many are then discouraged by the neglected state of the ground they’ve inherited or have no idea where to start.”

The sessions will be run from March 22 until May. Call Darrell Maryon on 07768 932 613 for more information.
